“It was a joy to work on a project where everyone took ownership and wanted to add a touch of beauty to the downtown neighborhood.” says Teresa Thorne, CAP executive director. Thanks to a partnership between CAP, Keep Birmingham Beautiful Commission, and the City’s Public Works, flower baskets at First, Third, and Fifth Avenues and Park Place at 20th Street North hang from brackets made and designed in Birmingham. “We liked the idea of having something special made here in the city of steel,”says Thorne. “They [the brackets] are a better construction and should last longer,” adds city maintenance supervisor, Floyd Huey, who took it upon himself to produce samples. Mr. Huey coordinated with Tri-Fab Steel, Inc. who bid on the project and then sponsored a corner. The simple, elegant design was penned by Mathew Myers on the KBBC board and the flower/plant arrangements were designed and nurtured under the supervision of Kaye Oden with the City’s horticulture division. Kay researched the plants and maintenance of hanging baskets in other communities. John and Dale with Public Works were assigned just to install the brackets, but they soon took some ownership in the project, adding a component to make the brackets more secure and putting their (excellent) opinions as to placement of the brackets into the pot. --Synergy June, 2004
