CAP Hurricane Relief Update - February 10- March 2006

3/16/06 -
2 boxes baby supplies, 2 boxes underware, 10 Food Boxes to Common Ground via Glynn Wilson from Locust Fork Publishing (Locust Fork News Blog).

This has been a busy month for us.  After what seemed like endless obstacles, the car donation (car donated by a person in Florida to a family in LA) is finally complete.  Our Louisiana family took an 18 hour bus trip to pick the car up. We will try to get a picture of Kim and her new car up on the website soon.  The family was so thrilled and grateful.  Kim says that when they get back on their feet, they are going to come to Bham to meet us in person.

Thanks to ANOTHER generous donation from Frank Waddell (he was the one to donate our precious van), we have sent a wireless laptop to Waveland to help facilitate the coordination of all the different groups doing rebuilding work.

I am also happy to report that we are facilitating communication and cooperation between the clinics.  Picayune was desperate for insulin and we were able to point them to the  Bay St. Louis clinic where they obtained supplies that had just come in.  The need for our diabetic testing supplies is still great.  With the help of our wonderful volunteers we are expanding the number of clinics we are supplying.  The clinics are so excited to get the kits.  The people down there have just been ignoring their health for so long!

Cousins Properties came through AGAIN with a load of sheets, blankets, pillows and pots and pans.  They turned right around and collected supplies for our first aid kits.  AMAZING!

Believe it or not, we have a classroom in a North Carolina school collecting Band Aids for us too.  We still need more cold medicine, chapstick and Rolaids.

Margaret from Disaster Corps in Bay St. Louis came through Bham in a van and we loaded her up with sheets, couple of boxes of new jackets, 36 diabetic kits, ½ pallet of no. 10 cans of food., 2 coffee pots.

We filled Candi’s car (from HandsOnBham) with 144 diabetic kits which she and her friend Tracie took to clinics in the NOLA area and Baton Rouge.  Four more clinics were added to our list.  All were most grateful!
Candi’s friend, Tracie came back for more and took  36 diabetic kits and a box of first aid kits to a NOLA clinic they missed earlier as well as 1 box of cleaning supplies, 2 dinning tents to Community Kitchens in St. Barnard Parrish, LA

Patti Kyle took 117 kits to Common Ground in NOLA.   She’s getting ready to make another trip too.

Laura Lowe from Mountain Top Church took down a large trailer load:

Bay St. Louis: pillows, cookware, sheets and blankets,

Depot Clinic – 27 diabetic kits, 1 box first aid kits, 1 box of  sharp disposal containers

Pass Christian:  The last of the clothing!!

Waveland and Pass Christian: 3 pallets worth of  baby supplies, paper towels, toilet paper, some food boxes

Volunteers going to MS and LA are still needed to take supplies.  Also, if you are interested in volunteering to work down there you can contact www.urbanlifeministries.com or HandsOnBhm@aol.com.

We could use some volunteers as well.  We just got in supplies for 500 diabetic kits and we need to put the kits together.  Don't be surprized when you come, we have shut down the electricity in the building to save money. There is enough natural light in the front to do what we need to do at this point.

And last, but not least, we are very pleased to announce that our steadfast homeless volunteer, Becky,  aka “Grandma” has finally gotten housing!  I know you all join me in wishing her a big congratulations! We are having a little house warming party for her at the warehouse on Friday at noon.
