CAP Hurricane Relief Update 7/1/06

How bad are things in Waveland, MS where the worst of  Katrina's storm surge came ashore?  Well here is a hint.  The Mayor of Waveland is just now getting his house gutted and the yard cleared.  A lawnmower was donated to a volunteer group who happened to be assigned to the Mayor's house that day.  They put the mower together and went to get gas and oil.  The Mayor's wife went to the other side of the house and when they returned only the instructions were left.  As you can imagine, this has been a real blow to the whole town's morale as the Mayor has been working so hard just to keep the town together.  I have called a couple of places who might donate with no luck.  So I'm putting out an

Urgent Call for a used mower in good working order!

We will also take donations to buy a new one.

In other news:

40 volunteers from the Free Will Baptist Convention came to the warehouse today and put together almost 1,000 diabetic kits - in THREE HOURS!!!  It would have taken us weeks to do that!  Thank you Free Will Baptists.  Thanks to UAB for bags and of course BAYER CO. for getting the supplies down here over night!  They have been so great to work with. And thanks to Becky ("Grandma") for organizing the volunteers.

Volunteer Doctors and Nurse Practitioners:  We are compiling a list of doctors and nurse practitioners who might be available to work in a clinic in a disaster area on very short notice.  I can guarantee you that this is a most rewarding experience.  Please email capbham@aol.com if you would like to be on this list.

We already have a clinic who needs help this week!!

We are working with the CAT (that's Citizen's Action Team) Database to get the database updated and to get volunteers to keep it updated.  This database is awesome and allows for coordinated grassroots participation from around the country!   In fact, they recently won a prestigious technical award in Mass. (and read a letter from City Action Partnership in their acceptance speech - how cool is that!).   If you would like to be part of this national team, please let us know by responding to this email (please change subject line to CAT dbase).  All that is necessary is that you have a computer with internet access and long distance phone service.

We always need people who are going down to MS or LA.

As always, thanks for your support!
