CAP Hurricane Update August 2007
Needs:   A Ride for Volunteer back to Waveland, MS or Biloxi around August 20th
                Locking Storage Cabinet
                Large rolls of packing tape
Volunteers to work in the warehouse

We are staying busy at the warehouse.  Thanks to Octavia (with Americorps) and Richard (long term volunteer visiting us) we are making some headway in sorting a donation from UAB.

We were able to make a quick trip to MS the last weekend in July thanks to Butch Fadely (who lent us his nice truck) and Dana and David Anderson who lent us use of a covered trailer.  The following were delivered:

Waveland- Copy machine donated through Butch to Katrina Relief along with 2 cases of paper
Gulfport- 8 boxes of orthopedic medical supplies to the Bayou Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America (New Contact).
Pearl River- 3 large boxes of medial supplies to Pearl River Fire Rescue

3 boxes of medical supplies were delivered to Ocean Springs, MS and 3 to D’Iberville, MS by former New Orleans resident, Carlyn Leeds.

We shipped
:
Angie, LA - 2 boxes of ortho medical supplies
New Orleans  -1 pallet of ortho medical supplies. Thanks to Xavier Univ. College of Pharmacy for handling storage and distribution for us!  These supplies will go to Jefferson Comm., Ibernia, Primary Health Service and Excelth.
Common Ground, NOLA – 2 boxes of diabetic supplies.

Organizations are starting to look to us for assistance in distributing medical supplies to the clinics in the Gulf Coast.  We are presently coordinating a donation from Brother’s Brother and are looking into another donation from Nicaragua Medical Alliance.  Ruth from Direct Relief International sent us some info to pass along about web sites where donations of insulin samples can be found.  (It’s always been a problem to get enough insulin down there).

FYI- I have posted an email from a New Orleans resident and animal relief worker who pretty much sums up the situation in NOLA and MS. http://www.capisdowntown.com/howarethings82007.html

With all the shipping we are doing, we’d like to thank Smerfit-Stone and Southpak for supplying boxes for us.  If you need to purchase boxes, toilet paper, paper towels, labels, printer ribbons, envelopes or packing supplies, please contact Phyllis at PMcCmb@aol.com and tell her we sent you. ;-)

If you know of anyone traveling to the Coast, PLEASE let us know!  capbham@aol.com.  We have a volunteer that needs a ride down and transport for medical supplies!

As always, thanks for all you do,
Laura
